The Nocturnal Journey

Then proof came that the suffering inflicted upon him SAW was not due to his being an object of contempt in the sight of Allah. It was rather a test, and a cloud behind which there were lights, for Allah had not abandoned him and He would never abandon him, but He would select him for Himself. Such is Allah’s sunnah (customary practice) in relation to HIs lovers and HIs loved ones. It is also the customary practice of the Islamic summons in every age and time.
As we have said, the Nocturnal Journey and the Heavenly Ascension are a decisive criterion by which the distinction was drawn between the era of Mecca and the era of Medina, but they also represent a choice presented by Allah to the truthful and the liars, in order to distinguish the sinners from the righteous, and to distinguish the weak from the strong in faith and belief. That is because – before the Hijra and before the transition to the era of Medina and the establishment of the Islamic government- the Prophet was in need of those who were real believers in actuality, not pretense, for they are the ones who stand firm against the infidels in wars and resist all future dangers.
The Nocturnal Journey was therefore like an introduction preparing the way for the new Islamic Life, “to ensure that those who perish will perish on the strength of indisputable evidence, and those who survive, will survive on the strength of indisputable evidence.”
Together with the splendid signs and miracles contained within the Nocturnal Journey, this is the scope of the matter and its foundation, since the Qur’an has recorded Allah’s saying:
…so that We might show him some of Our signs. (17:1)
